Exceptional Care, Today and Every Day

|

Alta Bates Summit Medical Center is one of the top hospitals in the country for quality, patient safety and clinical excellence.¹ And one of only three hospitals in the state rated best for heart bypass surgery.² Our registered nurses are a key reason for this exceptional patient care.
For more than 10 months, we have been trying to negotiate a new contract with the California Nurses Association (CNA). We have offered generous wages and benefits that support nursing excellence. Our offer meets or exceeds what CNA has agreed to at other hospitals:
- 16.5% wage increase over the 3-½ year life of the contract. Currently the average pay for nurses who choose to work full time is more than $120,000 per year
- Premium-free health care for nurses, their families and domestic partners
- Retiree healthcare benefits
- A rich pension plan
- An all RN staff at the bedside in key units
- More RNs at the bedside than anytime in the past, plus staff support for meal and break relief
Unfortunately, CNA has called a 10 day strike, March 21 - 31. Union leaders are telling nurses to strike for the third time in 6 months over the union’s real agenda—to grow members and dues.
Alta Bates Summit will not allow patient care to be disrupted. We have contracted for skilled replacement nurses, and we anticipate that, as in the past, many of our nurses will reject CNA’s unreasonable strike and be here to care for patients.
The strike will be no exception. All campuses of our medical center, including Alta Bates, Herrick and Summit will be open. Both the Alta Bates and Summit Emergency Departments will be open.
Every day is a most important day in our patients’ lives… and every day Alta Bates Summit provides exceptional care to them, their families and our community.
