Young Adult’s Cancer Support Group
Who: Alta Bates Summit Comprehensive Cancer Center
What: A diagnosis of cancer as a young adult comes at a time when you least expect to be worrying about your health. Your questions or concerns may seem very different than those of older or younger people with a similar diagnosis. This drop-in group gives you the chance to gather with others your age who “get it.”
• Connect with others in their late teens, 20’s and 30’s who have been diagnosed with cancer.
• Discuss the unique emotional and physical challenges of life with and after cancer as a young adult.
• Exchange ideas in a safe space about how to talk to your doctor, cope with treatment, or anything else you have on your mind.

Stress Reduction: The Practice of Mindfulness - September 2010
Mindfulness teaches us to be present in the moment
with whatever is happening in our lives. Through
this simple yet powerful practice, we can learn
how to transform our ability to cope with the stress
of everyday life, the stress of illness and begin to
cultivate mental balance, generosity and compassion
towards ourselves and others.
This experiential 8-week series includes detailed
instruction in body/mind relaxation techniques,
mindfulness meditation, gentle yoga and how to work
more skillfully with the challenges of daily life.

FREE Skin Cancer Community Screening Clinic - August 5
Alta Bates Summit’s Markstein Cancer Education and Prevention Services is offering free community skin cancer screenings Thursday, August 5.
The clinic is staffed by board certified dermatologists who will look at up to three areas of concern and provide written recommendations for follow up that may be needed. The focus of these screenings is for skin cancers and cancer risk reduction. Concerns related to cosmetic flaws, rashes or other irregularities are not evaluated in this type of clinic.

Free Community Prostate Cancer Screening - December 2009
If you are a man over 40, or the wife, sister, child or friend of one, this message should be important to you. And, it’s even more important if you’re an African American or Hispanic man over the age of 35!
Prostate Cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in men – and it kills TWICE as many African American men as any other racial or ethnic group. Every 3 minutes a man in America is diagnosed with prostate cancer.
What can you do? Early detection. Because the disease may cause no symptoms in the early stages, yearly medical check-ups are crucial. Early detection and treatment can lead to complete recovery. A simple blood test combined with a physical exam can dramatically increase the likelihood of early prostate cancer detection and lead to a nearly 100% survival rate. That’s the kind of statistic a patient wants to hear.
Currently, both the American Urologic Association and the American Cancer Society recommend annual prostate cancer screenings from ages 40-70, and annual screenings beginning at age 35 for men at high risk (African-American and Hispanic men and those with a family history of the disease).

Peripheral Artery Disease and You - It’s all about circulation… October 2009

Tele-Care Program - July 2009
Who: Alta Bates Summit Medical Center’s Tele-Care Program
What: Founded in 1970, Tele-Care is a free telephone contact service for members of the community who live alone, are homebound, disabled, convalescing from an illness or isolated. Volunteers make daily calls to clients in a three county area (Alameda, Contra Costa, and San Francisco), 365 days a year. The daily calls in this unique free service are a friendly ‘check in’ that helps monitor the client’s well-being, refer clients to outside sources for help or information if needed, and help them maintain a connection to their community. Tele-Care volunteers make every attempt to help clients sustain themselves in their own homes. Tele-Care offers safety and a feeling of comfort by providing follow-up protocols in the event a client cannot be reached.
When: Calls are made to client’s everyday – even holidays.
Cost: Free.

Free Community Prostate Cancer Screening - May 26, 2009
Prostate Cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in men – and it kills TWICE as many African American men as any other racial or ethnic group. Every 3 minutes a man in the America is diagnosed with prostate cancer.
What can you do? Early detection. Because the disease may cause no symptoms in the early stages, yearly medical check-ups are crucial. Early detection and treatment can lead to complete recovery. A simple blood test combined with a physical exam can dramatically increase the likelihood of early prostate cancer detection and lead to a nearly 100% survival rate. That’s the kind of statistic a patient wants to hear.
Currently, both the American Urologic Association and the American Cancer Society recommend annual prostate cancer screenings from ages 40-70, and annual screenings beginning at age 35 for men at high risk (African-American and Hispanic men and those with a family history of the disease).
