    We enhance the health and well being of people in the communities we serve through compassion and excellence.

    With more than one hundred years of commitment to the communities it serves, Alta Bates Summit Medical Center is the East Bay’s largest private, not-for-profit medical center. This multi-campus regional, tertiary care medical center includes Samuel Merritt University and the Alta Bates Summit Foundation.

    Known for exceptional quality care outcomes, experience and extensive services, Alta Bates Summit is recognized by OSHPD (Office Statewide Health Planning and Development) as one of only Bay Area hospital with better than expected outcomes in cardiac surgery. The medical center offers outstanding Centers of Excellence in Women and Infants Services, Cardiovascular Care, Behavioral Health, Orthopedics, and Cancer diagnosis and treatment.

    Patient Services

    Alta Bates Summit Medical Center offers comprehensive tertiary services designed to meet the needs of diverse communities. Services include 24-hour emergency care, minimally invasive surgery, high risk obstetrics, Level III Newborn Intensive Care Nursery, a Joint Commission accredited Regional Stroke Center, Joint Commission Gold Seal approved Hip Joint and Knee Joint Replacement, acute rehabilitation, diagnostic imaging, HIV/AIDS services, behavioral health, chemical dependency treatment, physical therapy, intensive care and laboratory services.

    Sampling of Community Partnerships/Programs

    In 2011, Alta Bates Summit Medical Center provided more than $10.7 million in support of charity care (not including subsidy of MediCal or other government programs) and various community programs and services including:

    • Asian Outreach
    • Disabled Community Health Clinic
    • East Bay AIDS Center
    • Ethnic Health Institute
    • Health Ministry
    • Disabled Community Health Clinic
    • Youth Bridge Mentoring

    Improving Facilities and Access

    The Sutter Health network of physicians and not-for-profit hospitals is investing billions of dollars over ten years to rebuild, replace and expand much of Northern California’s healthcare infrastructure. Locally, plans (or completed projects) include:

    • Construction of new a 238-bed, 11 story (above ground) patient care pavilion.
    • Construction of a new 1,000-space parking garage.
    • Improvements that meet seismic requirements throughout Alta Bates Summit’s three campuses and improve the emergency department at the Summit Campus.
    • Establishment of a new Family Resource Center on the Alta Bates Campus.

    Excellence in Women’s Care

    Alta Bates Summit Medical Center has cared for women and their infants since its very beginnings in 1904. Our physicians and staff provide you with the comfort and reassurance of knowing that your care is coming from a nationally recognized medical center.

    The medical center delivers more babies than any other hospital in Northern California, with special expertise in high risk deliveries and newborn intensive care. Alta Bates Summit physicians and staff have services with the special needs of women in mind including, women’s heart health, pelvic health, gynecologic oncology, and eating disorders. The medical center’s exceptional Carol Ann Read Breast Health Center is dedicated to the quick diagnosis of breast cancer.

    Our physicians and staff provide you with the comfort and reassurance of knowing that you are receiving care from a nationally recognized medical center. Alta Bates Summit’s Women’s Service Line offers outstanding care to women throughout all the stages of their life. Whether delivering over 7,000 newborns a year, offering education and outreach to the challenges of midlife changes, working with teens with eating disorders, health screenings, heart health, or diagnosing and treating cancers – Alta Bates Summit’s commitment to women and their unique needs is ongoing.

    Community Support

    The Alta Bates Summit Foundation is dedicated to providing resources to help ensure that Alta Bates Summit Medical Center continues to deliver the best quality health care to its community and patients. The foundation solicits philanthropic gifts that fund programs, services, education, research, capital projects and improved patient care.
