Bariatric Care Program

Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence

If you are one of the 9 million severely obese Americans who have little hope of losing weight and keeping it off, then you may be a candidate for our surgical weight-loss program. Bariatric surgery re-routes the digestive system, allowing you to eat less, reduce your appetite for high fat and high-sugar foods, and absorb fewer calories. As a result, you can lose weight rapidly while changing the eating habits that contribute to obesity.

We offer innovative surgical procedures performed by our experienced medical team in our Oakland facilities. Our proactive approach supports you through the lifelong changes that occur following surgery.

We perform:
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

Laparoscopic Adjustable Band

In addition to losing weight, bariatric surgery may also provide you with relief from a variety of health problems that are linked to obesity, including:
· High blood pressure, hypertension
· High blood cholesterol, dyslipidemia
· Type 2 (non-insulin dependent) diabetes
· Coronary heart disease
· Obstructive sleep apnea and respiratory problems

For some people, weight-loss surgery can be a life-saving option: More than 90 percent of morbidly obese patients with medical conditions such as diabetes or hypertension no longer require medications to control their diseases.

We consider bariatric surgery to be one of the tools in our comprehensive program to help you achieve the weight loss you desire. Other elements of our program include extensive patient education, support groups, nutritional counseling, and periodic health check-ups.

Referral Process

The following are the steps you can expect to follow after you've been referred to our program:

1. You will attend an informational seminar. These seminars are routinely held at least once per month. Please call us at (510) 869-8972 to sign up as space is limited. Keep a note of the place and time of the seminar as it can change from month to month.

2. You will attend the nutrition and exercise class. We will call you to sign up for this class once you have turned in paperwork from the above mentioned seminar.

3. Your physician provides us with recent (last 3 months) history and physical, mammogram/Pap smear, or fecal occult blood testing when indicated.

4. One of our surgeons interviews and examines you.

5. If you meet the criteria for bariatric intervention and want to proceed, we begin our usual evaluation process that includes a dietary consultation, psychological evaluation, ultrasound of the gallbladder, and esophagogastroduodenoscopy. We also consult with a pulmonologist, cardiologist, and have you undergo sleep studies if needed.

6. Upon completion of the work-up, you return for a second visit with the surgeon.

7. If the surgery is to proceed, we schedule it pending insurance approval.
6. We maintain close contact with your physician as you progress through the evaluation process.
