Health Initiatives
EHI collaborates with community partners to implement health initiatives designed to reduce the burden of chronic and preventable disease and enhance the quality of life for underserved and minority populations. Specifically, EHI has an initiative for Asthma, Cancer, Diabetes, and Hypertension and a committee of community partners to implement, monitor and evaluate the plan. Each initiative follows the C.A.R.E. model for effective outreach.
Asthma
EHI Asthma Initiative includes the development of a coordinated and collaborative approach to asthma education and the reduction of environmental asthma triggers by bringing together individuals and organizations involved in prevention, education, treatment, and policy advocacy related to asthma..

Hypertension
EHI Hypertension Initiative is primarily targeted at the African American and Asian communities, which comprise close to 60% of Alta Bates Summit's primary service area. Hypertension is the leading cause of preventable deaths among African Americans and is a major concern among Asian Americans. In conjunction with the Health Ministry/Parish Nurse Program, and the Health Access/LifeSpan Program, EHI is working with East Bay Area churches to provide blood pressure screenings. EHI also hosts an annual Hypertension Symposium for health care providers.
