Breast MRI is used to evaluate the extent of breast cancer in patients who have been recently diagnosed. Dr. Linda Gordon, radiologist at Alta Bates Summit. Dr. Linda Gordon: Breast MRI is more sensitive than mammography and ultrasound in finding cancers. What we are able to do here is biopsy the area. It allows us to get a breast sample with a two day turnaround and we have been able to diagnose many, many breast cancers that would have been previously undetected until they were larger. Interviewer: Breast MRI allows physicians to screen for additional breast cancers. Dr. Gordon: People who have breast cancer can be extremely scared and if we do an MRI and say that is the only site of abnormality that is a huge relief to those patients.
