Interviewer: Alta Bates Summit Medical Center presents Experience Matters. Breast MRI is used to evaluate the extent of breast cancer in patients who have been recently diagnosed. Dr. Linda Gordon, radiologist at Alta Bates Summit.



Dr. Linda Gordon: Breast MRI is more sensitive than mammography and ultrasound in finding cancers. What we are able to do here is biopsy the area. It allows us to get a breast sample with a two day turnaround and we have been able to diagnose many, many breast cancers that would have been previously undetected until they were larger.



Interviewer: Breast MRI allows physicians to screen for additional breast cancers.



Dr. Gordon: People who have breast cancer can be extremely scared and if we do an MRI and say that is the only site of abnormality that is a huge relief to those patients.
