Until recently Bay Area patients with the rare diagnosis of primary bone cancer were forced to go to great lengths for treatment. Alta Bates Summit has established a new program in orthopedic oncology to meet this need. Dr. Rakesh Donthineni, the program's founder. Dr. Rakesh Donthineni: There are a couple of types of cancer that can happen in the bone and soft tissue. The first one is the primary cancers which essentially happen within the bone or soft tissue, but of course, cancers that happen in the prostate, breast, lung, kidney, etcetera, can spread to bones. Interviewer: All of these cancers can now be diagnosed and treated at Alta Bates Summit. Dr. Donthineni: This close interaction between all of the different specialists, I work very closely with the radiation oncologists and even the pathologists, say if there's any question, I'll talk to them and I'll review the imaging studies of the x-rays with them so that they know what I'm thinking about.
