Male Interviewer: Alta Bates Summit Medical Center presents "Important Developments in Healthcare." Always at the leading edge of technology, Alta Bates Summit has taken laparoscopic surgery to the next level. Director for the Robotic Surgery Program, Dr. Steven Stanten.



Dr. Steven Stanten: It's every surgery patient's hope to recover quickly and comfortably. Laparoscopic surgery makes this possible; however laparoscopic instruments limit the surgeon's hand's motion, curbing the number of surgeries that can be done laparoscopically.



Interviewer: Now those access problems have been solved by a tiny robotic arm called the da Vinci System.



Dr. Stanten: The da Vinci Surgical System offers all of laparoscopic surgery's benefits and none of its limitations. What the da Vinci System allows us to do is to sit at a console right next to the patient and control the robotic arms that do the work inside the patient.
