Dr. Jeffrey Mann, staff orthopedic surgeon at Alta Bates Summit talks about the medical center's new approaches to arthritis.
Dr. Mann: The main form of surgical treatment for advanced arthritis is joint replacement surgery. Patients are commonly able to return to their daily lives pain free. However, the procedure does not allow them to return to sports.
Interviewer: The most advanced treatment, cartilage replacement does allow for a return to maximum activity.
Dr. Mann: One technique involves growing cartilage cells in the laboratory and then replacing the areas of damaged cartilage with the healthy cells. The goal of cartilage replacement is to return patients to unlimited activities without discomfort.
