Male Interviewer: Alta Bates Summit Medical Center presents Important Developments in Healthcare. Alta Bates Summit has pioneered a new style of intensive care nursery. Alison Brooks is the Clinical Specialist for Women and Infants. Ms. Brooks: This is a relatively new approach. The Director of our Women and Infants, Katie Tothan (phonetic) designed this and we've had visitors from around the world looking at our design. They've gone back and subsequently designed their nurseries based on our principle, but certainly in the Bay Area we are one of a kind. Interviewer: In addition to physical care, the Newborn ICU focuses on infant developmental needs with the Compassionate Touch Program. Ms. Brooks: Compassionate Touch is a program that has really evolved from our recognizing that the family is the most important element in a baby's life and also recognizing how challenging it can be for our families. Interviewer: Developing important advances in health is part of how Alta Bates Summit Medical Center strives to enhance the health and well-being of people in the communities they serve through compassion and excellence.
