Interviewer: Alta Bates Summit Medical Center presents Experience Matters. Newborn Intensive Care Unit, Clinical Nurse Specialist Alison Brooks on patent ductus arteriosus.
Ms. Alison Brooks: The patent ductus arteriosus is a temporary blood vessel that is part of the fetal blood circulation system and it usually closes shortly after birth. Often with our preemies it won't close and that can be due to their immature lungs.
Interviewer: One option for correction is surgery.
Ms. Brooks: Now the surgical team comes to the baby's bedside. We create a mini operating room right here at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit. The family doesn't have to undergo undue stress by being transported to another facility where they might not be familiar with the staff. So we have now a full team that have enabled us to give the very best care to these babies and their families.
Interviewer: When it comes to your health, experience matters. Learn more about the Women and Infant Center of Excellence at altabatessummit.org, a member of the Sutter Health family.
