From dealing with a new diagnosis to writing about cancer, you and your family are offered a wide variety of classes and support groups to help cope with your condition.
Education is also an important area of survivorship. We provide many on-going classes and support groups including a new patient orientation class, nutrition workshops, prostate cancer workshops and many others.

- Man to Man: Prostate Cancer Support Group (SUMMIT)
A group meeting for men with prostate cancer which provides support, information and education. No one needs to face prostate cancer alone. Partners welcome. Meets the 4th Tuesday of every month, 6:15 p.m. - 7:45 p.m. Markstein Cancer Education and Prevention Services, Providence Pavilion, 3100 Summit Street, Oakland. No Charge. Pre-registration required. PC in the City strives to meet the needs of a young, work-oriented man, who may have significant quality of life concerns about sexuality and intimacy, managing work, parenting or financial responsibility issues with a diagnosis of cancer. The group offers an opportunity to discuss such concerns with other like-minded men. The group meets the second Tuesday of every month from 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. and is facilitated by a prostate cancer survivor trained by the American Cancer Society. Our Oncology Registered Dietitian, Tinrin Chew, RD, CSO, leads this workshop focusing on nutrition and lifestyle research, impact of dietary factors on cancer cells, nature’s bounty, use of vitamins and dietary supplements, and nutrition planning for optimal health and survivorship specific to prostate cancer. Dreams are doorways to access our own inner wisdom for healing. In this experiential group we will work with the assumption that “all dreams come in the service of health and wholeness”--that dreams can often give us clues on how to work creatively with difficult, even traumatic aspects of our lives. The particular focus of this group will be on dreams as tools for empowerment and healing.- Dreamwork basics

- Cancer in Other Words
Introductory writing workshop for cancer patients and survivors. Cancer doesn’t always make sense. But writing about it does! Many people find that writing about cancer is a uniquely healing experience. In this supportive one-afternoon workshop, you’ll explore your relationship with cancer via a series of enjoyable and thought-provoking writing exercises. Both new and experienced writers are welcome. Instructor Autumn Stephens is a widely published author, editor and cancer survivor. “Graduates” of this free introductory workshop are cordially invited to join one of the many ongoing writing groups sponsored by Alta Bates Summit Medical Center held at Markstein Education and Prevention Services.
