Female Interviewer: Alta Bates Summit Medical Center presents Experience Matters. Dr. Stephen J. Kahn, Interventional Radiologist at Alta Bates Summit on a new treatment for liver tumors. Dr. Stephen J. Kahn: SIR-Spheres are a new way of delivering radio embolic material to the liver tumor. The SIR-Spheres are very small. They are delivered through the bloodstream using a very small catheter. They stay within the liver tumor and are in position to allow for the delivery of focused radiation. The radiation has a localized effect that serves to treat and effectively kill the tumor cells in that area that was embolized. Interviewer: Localized radiation has many benefits. Dr. Kahn: This allows us to reduce time in the hospital as only a small incision is made, and after the procedure, in many cases, the patient is allowed to go home the same day. Interviewer: When it comes to your health, Experience Matters. Learn more at AltaBatesSummit.org, a member of the Sutter Health family.
