Public Transportation

|
Public transportation to the medical center is readily available. For information on the bus routes to the Alta Bates, Herrick, or Summit Campus, contact AC Transit at (510) 839-2882.
We provide Van Shuttle Service from the MacArthur BART station to the Summit Campus between the hours of 6:00 am and 9:00 am and 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm. There is no van service between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm, and no service during the weekends or holidays. This is a FREE service and donations are gladly accepted.
We also provide van shuttle service from the Ashby BART Station to the Alta Bates Campus. The shuttle begins at 5:50 am and runs every 15 minutes until 1:00 am the next morning. Between 9:30 am and 3:00 pm, and 6:30 pm and 1:00 am, the shuttle makes an additional stop at the Herrick Campus. There is no shuttle service on weekends or holidays.
There is also regular van shuttle service between the Summit, Alta Bates, and Herrick Campuses. Contact our Parking and Transportation Department for the most current schedule by calling (510) 655-4000 Ext. 2126.

Patient Rooms

|
We've designed our patient rooms to be as comfortable and convenient as possible. If you have any questions about your room or the services we provide, please don't hesitate to ask your nurse.
Television We offer free TV for our patients. We ask that you keep the volume at a moderate level, and if you share a room, turn it off by 10:00 pm.
Mail Mail, as well as any gifts from family and friends, may be sent to your room. Ask your nurse for the correct address. Please request that the sender include your full name under which you are registered and your room number when addressing letters or packages.
Telephones Telephones are located in every room except for the critical care unit. You may make as many local calls as you wish for free; however all long distance calls must be charged to your home telephone or to a credit card.
You may receive calls in your room between 7:00 am - 9:00 pm. If you do not wish to be disturbed, ask your nurse to switch off your phone. When you wish to make a telephone call, simply dial "9" and then the number. For calls within the facility, dial the appropriate extension or room number.

Interpretation & Translation Services

|
Patients of Alta Bates Summit Medical Center can feel comfortable and safe knowing language interpreter services are available during their stay with us.
If needed, interpreter services are available via telephone or in person for assistance with medical information and education. Family members and friends are also welcome to help you with other translation.
American Sign Language interpreters are available as well.
Please speak with your nurse or with Admissions to request any of these services.

Hospitalization & Personal Belongings

|
If you are preparing for hospitalization, you only need certain personal items, such as toilet articles, bathrobe, slippers and night clothes.
Please send all valuables such as credit cards, jewelry, computers, cash, and family heirlooms home with a family member or friend.
If you are unable to send them home, have your valuables placed in the hospital safe. To do so, please ask your nurse to secure them and be sure you receive a receipt.
Please Note: If you choose to keep valuable items with you during your stay, you assume responsibility for their safekeeping. Alta Bates Summit Medical Center is only responsible for items kept in the hospital safe.

Patient Safety and Comfort

|
Smoking is acknowledged to be both a health and fire hazard. Please be aware that smoking is NOT permitted in our facilities. NO smoking is permitted in patient rooms. If you wish to smoke please notify your nurse, who will assist you.
Because your safety and comfort are important to us, we've made a list of basic safety precautions and general guidlines that we ask you to observe.- Please wear your plastic identification band(s) at all times.
- Please notify your nurse if you wish to leave your nursing unit.
- Let the nurse know if you have dentures, a hearing aid, contact lenses, or other prosthetic devices. Be sure to store them properly when not in use; if you leave them wrapped in tissue on your bed or tray, they could be disposed of accidentally.
- Please report any accidents, such as spills or broken glass, right away so your nurse can take care of them promptly.
- Flowers are welcome in our facilities except for the coronary care, cardiopulmonary and intensive care units.
- No alcohol or drugs are permitted on the premises. Our Security Staff are informed of all potential substance abuse problems and are involved in management of any potential behavior problems.

Disabled Patient / Visitor Services

Alta Bates Summit Medical Center is committed to making all reasonable accommodations to ensure that the special needs of patients and visitors with disabilities are addressed. Standard hospital equipment does not fit everyone. Please let us know if you are taller than 6’6” or weigh more than 300 pounds so we can provide you with the appropriate equipment.
Entrances The main entrances to the Summit Campus (Merritt, Providence, and Peralta Pavilions) and the Alta Bates Campus are wheelchair accessible. The main entrance to the Herrick Campus on Dwight Way and the Herrick Campus entrance on Haste Street are also wheelchair accessible.
Accessible Restroom Locations Summit Campus: Merritt Pavilion: First, third and fifth floors. Providence Pavilion: Ground floor behind the gift shop. Peralta Pavilion: Ground floor near the lab.
Alta Bates Campus: Main lobby, and third floor in Labor & Delivery near the North elevators.
Herrick Campus: Every floor next to elevator “C”.
Drinking Fountains Summit Campus: Merritt Pavilion: Ground, second, fourth and fifth floors. Providence Pavilion: Ground floor behind the gift shop. Peralta Pavilion: Ground floor near the Renal Center.
Alta Bates Campus: Ground floor near cafeteria and in Radiology, third floor in Labor & Delivery, sixth floor on 6NW.
Herrick Campus: All floors opposite elevator “C”.
Public Telephones Summit Campus: Merritt Pavilion: TTY- first floor. Wheelchair accessible phones – first, third and fourth floors. All phones volume-controlled. Providence Pavilion: TTY – first floor. Wheelchair accessible phone – first floor. All phones volume-controlled. Peralta Pavilion: No TTY. Assistive Listening Systems Assistive listening systems for the hearing impaired are in place in some meeting rooms, and a portable system is available that can be transported to any location. If you plan to attend a hospital-sponsored community event and will need this system, please notify the event organizing department in advance.
Guide Dogs/Service Animals Guide dogs or service animals are generally permitted everywhere in the medical center. Where there are clinical concerns, the attending physician should be consulted. The patient is responsible for arranging for someone to take care of the animal’s needs.

For Our Patients If you bring any of your own adaptive equipment to the hospital, please mark it clearly with your name and phone number. Special equipment may need to be checked by our engineering staff prior to use within the medical center.

Visiting Hours

|
Monday through Sunday from 11:00 am - 8:00 pm For the benefit of our patients, areas such as intensive care, telemetry, coronary monitoring, etc., have specific limitations regarding the number of visitors and visting hours. Please check with the nursing staff in these areas before visiting.
Permission for visits outside of regular visiting hours may be granted at the discretion of the unit supervisor.
Children over 12 are welcome in all areas; younger children are permitted only in the maternity unit. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Cafeterias and Food Services

|
Each Campus the medical center has it's own cafeteria to provide staff, physicians and visitors with a variety of warm and cold meal options.
Alta Bates Campus Cafeteria is located on the ground floor.
Herrick Campus Bistro is located on the first floor.
Summit Campus Cafeterias are located in the Merritt Pavilion on the first floor, and in the Providence Pavilion on the ground floor.
For Our Patients Patient meal services are provided by our dieticians in accordance with your physician's instructions. In some instances, diagnostic tests or other medical considerations will make it necessary for you to have a change in your diet or meal schedule. We'll let you know when your physician prescribes any modifications. If you have special needs or preferences please contact your nurse.

Gift Shops

|
Each Campus of the medical center has a Gift Shop located on the ground floor of each campus.
Purchase everything from candy to fresh flowers, jewelry to cards, and clothing to gift items. The Gift Shops are operated by our Auxiliary at the Summit Campus, and by our Volunteer Department at the Alta Bates and Herrick Campuses.
